hot take book buying is just as valid a hobby as book reading

if I want to reread A Song of Ice and Fire purely because of this thats valid

apologies to @RussellsBarbershopQuartet I take back all the mean things I said about your books Im gonna be on your side in like two weeks

@kiosk I think asoiaf has a lot of Issues, but I also think a lot of the issues around it come from its fans being dogshit at interpreting fiction

@kiosk people are misogynistic about Sansa, for example, rather than understanding her story as about trauma and isolation

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet oh yeah absolutely. I wouldnt talk to most fans about like. anything

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet just like how I dont want to talk to many many dune fans who think its a story about a cool guy hero

@kiosk the one good thing about asoiaf fandom is that many people completely misunderstand what makes the twists in asoiaf good--they're all firmly rooted in characterization and absurdly detailed world lore--and so they constantly come up with galaxy brain dumbass theories like "what if tyrion is secretly a targaryen"

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet also like. the big twists I can think of right now just make sense from a story perspective, its not anything thats just there to shock you, it makes sense for the starks to lose everything they have in the most brutal way, thats the whole point

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet like it takes the ones youre supposed to empathize / sympathize with and throws them into the worst possible situations again and again and again, by the time the red wedding comes around you cant even say its out of left field anymore

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@kiosk the red wedding is shocking because of the how grisly and brutal it is but literally going in Robb Stark and Catelyn have a conversation about how they don't trust Walder Frey but have to do this because of mistakes they've made

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@kiosk the shock is from how quickly and brutally it gets bad, not because you expected Walder fucking Frey to be a good dude

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet oh I mean people were absolutely shocked when the show got to that moment but again, thats because theyre bad at taking hints

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@kiosk the show literally made sure to introduce The Rains of Castamere, a song entirely about how brutal Tywin is to anyone who crosses him lmao

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@kiosk the starks also like don't lose because it's shocking, they lose because asoiaf is a tragedy and they all have tragic flaws

a song of ice and fire spoilers

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet exactly. its not just there to fuck with you

@RussellsBarbershopQuartet @kiosk i'll still never get over the fact that the fan theorists took a preview chapter of book 6 that just got released and that there was the world's version of chess, and that a piece fell on the ground, and extrapolated from that that one of the dragons would die and be turned into a zombie by the night king, like, how do you get there

@georgespolitzer @kiosk I mean, as much as I make fun of galaxy brain theorists, Martin foreshadows the FUCK out of everything, so

@georgespolitzer @kiosk by pure chance people will put together the foreshadowing in the correct ways
